Molecular analysis showed that the Arabian cobra is a distinct lineage representing the sister group of all Egyptian cobra populations in northern and eastern Africa; morphologically it is distinguished by a higher number of subcaudal scales and a clear tendency towards fewer scale rows around the neck and at midbody.
The Arabian cobra Naja arabica was assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List in 2012, as it occurs over a wide area of the western Arabian Peninsula, although its population trend is unknown and it may be affected by venom extraction and the exotic pet trade.
