It lives in horizontal burrows that it digs in dry soil in desert areas, or in rodent burrows; in Jordan it has also been collected from the Mediterranean region with dense forests, but in small numbers.

The black fat-tailed scorpion is found in Saudi Arabia, Syria, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran, and its range also extends to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. In Jordan it is widespread in the eastern desert and Wadi Araba as far as Aqaba and Wadi Rum.
