It has been proposed that Heliopithecus be grouped with Afropithecus and the Namibian ape Otavipithecus in a single group called Afropithecini, but a 1995 study of dental enamel found little support for this proposal.

The Paleobiology Database places Heliopithecus in Proconsulidae, while the GBIF backbone treats it as a synonym of the African genus Afropithecus, so its status as a separate genus is still debated.
