Where it lives

This elephant lived in an Arabia wetter than today: the Baynunah Formation (about 7.7–7.0 million years ago) records rivers and water-dependent savanna animals now absent from Arabia, including proboscideans, mostly of African origin.

Petrocchi named the genus Stegotetrabelodon in 1941; its other species are known from fossils in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Libya and Italy.
