Fossils and sedimentological and stable-isotope data from the Baynunah Formation indicate a less arid environment than the region today, with strong seasonality, C4 grasslands, woodlands and rivers. A 2025 study reports equids in the fossil assemblage and strong biogeographical links to Africa for most fossils, alongside some Eurasian elements.
