يستخرج الغاف الماء بجذره الوتدي من عمق يصل إلى 20 م، ويورق ويزهر ويثمر في أشد الشهور جفافًا (مارس–يونيو) حين تكون النباتات الأخرى عارية، واستُخدم لتثبيت الكثبان الرملية في الإمارات.
