During quiet periods (recessions), the desert locust is usually confined to the arid and semi-arid deserts of Africa, the Near East and south-west Asia that receive less than 200 mm of rain a year, an area of about 16 million km² in about 30 countries. During plagues, however, it may spread over about 29 million km² extending into parts of 60 countries, that is, more than 20% of the world's land area.

The desert locust breeds when moist soil, suitable egg-laying sites and green vegetation are available; rain may create these conditions, but rainfall alone does not mean that locusts will appear.
Dense desert locust swarms can destroy crops and fodder, making the species a threat to agriculture and food security.
