Flora of China describes apricot as a tree 5–8 metres tall, sometimes reaching 12 metres, with greyish-brown bark and broadly ovate to orbicular leaves 5–9 cm long. Flowers are solitary or occasionally paired and open before the leaves; the treatment gives a diameter of 2–4.5 cm and white or pink petals that may be tinged red. The drupe is globose or ovoid, rarely obovoid, white, yellow or orange and often tinged red, measuring 1.5 to over 2.5 cm. The flesh is described as succulent, and the seed as bitter or sweet.
