Flora of China lists apricot habitats including sparse forests on mountain slopes, slopes and gullies, at elevations of 700–3,000 metres in several parts of China, and also records it in cultivation.
GRIN records apricot as native to China, Korea and Kyrgyzstan and naturalized in Japan, while noting its obscure exact native range and wide cultivation. Flora of China suggests an origin in Central Asia. The background account of a study published in 2021 reports it in smaller numbers among crops on high terraces at 1,640–1,950 metres in the oases of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, Oman.
