As described by MBARI, Vampyroteuthis infernalis pulls its food-laden filaments through its arms.
In laboratory observations published by MBARI, the vampire squid drew the filament through its arms, removing the particles stuck to it and wrapping them in mucus.
Vampyroteuthis infernalis has no ink for defense, but it can release a bioluminescent fluid to distract predators, according to MBARI.
