The IUCN Cat Specialist Group lists six wild species as the principal prey of Panthera leo in Asia: Rusa unicolor, Axis axis, Tetracerus quadricornis, Gazella bennettii, Sus scrofa and Boselaphus tragocamelus. A 2023 scat-analysis study in the Gir region of India found that Rusa unicolor was the largest dietary component within the protected area, while Boselaphus tragocamelus was the largest in the surrounding multi-use lands, and Gazella bennettii formed only a small part of the diet.
