The ASM Mammal Diversity Database does not recognise the Saudi gazelle as a separate species: it includes saudiya within the dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas) and lists 'Saudi Gazelle' among its other common names, departing from Groves & Grubb (2011), who recognised it; the question remains disputed.

The taxonomic rank of the Saudi gazelle has changed several times: it was first described in 1935 as a subspecies of Gazella gazella, was elevated to species rank in 1939, was reduced in 1951 to a subspecies of the dorcas gazelle (Gazella dorcas), and was restored to species rank in 1988; nevertheless, a 2001 IUCN/SSC datasheet lists it as the subspecies Gazella dorcas saudiya.

The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) lists Gazella saudiya as a valid species, whereas the Mammal Diversity Database includes saudiya within the dorcas gazelle, Gazella dorcas. The two references therefore use different taxonomic treatments.

Specialists disagree: a museum-DNA study treats the Saudi gazelle as the sister species of the African dorcas gazelle and a distinct evolutionary unit, the IUCN regional assessment keeps it as a species, while the Mammal Diversity Database lists saudiya as a synonym of Gazella dorcas.
