The hamadryas baboon is strongly dimorphic between the sexes in size and coat: the adult male weighs about 21.5 kg and the female about 9.4 kg. The male's coat is greyish-brown with light "whiskers" on the cheeks that merge into a dense, prominent silver mantle (mane), and the skin of its face and muzzle is pink or bright red, whereas the female is plain olive-brown with a dull greyish-brown face. The infant is born with black fur, which turns olive-brown at about six months of age.
