The desert locust lives about three to five months depending on the weather and environmental conditions, and passes through three stages: egg, nymph (hopper) and adult. The eggs hatch in about two weeks, and the nymphs pass through five to six instars over 30–40 days. The female lays her eggs in a pod in sandy soil at a depth of 10–15 cm; a solitary female lays 95–158 eggs, and a gregarious female usually fewer than 80 eggs per pod, and she lays at least three times in her life.
