The species was named in honour of Dr. Babu Rajendralala Mitra (1824–1891), an archaeologist and anthropologist; Anderson stated that Mitra obtained the holotype from a Kashmiri merchant who said he had brought it from Arabia, which is why the type locality was recorded as "Arabia".
