Greater flamingo pairs build a mud nest on an island or lake shore; it hardens in the sun and holds a single egg in its hollow centre, which both parents incubate in turn for 27–31 days. The chicks are then raised in communal crèches watched over by adults, and the bird does not reach sexual maturity before 5–6 years of age.
