The official field guide to the invertebrates of AlUla documents the plain tiger butterfly (Danaus chrysippus) in AlUla Governorate and lists several observation sites within it. This is evidence of the local guide's coverage in Saudi Arabia, not a survey of all regions of the Kingdom.

The plain tiger butterfly occurs throughout Africa, the Mediterranean basin and South Asia, and in different parts of its range it is known as the “African Monarch”, the “African Queen” and the “Plain Tiger”.
Like its relative the American monarch, this butterfly feeds on milkweed plants, and its bright colours warn predators of its bad taste. In Africa it is divided into four subspecies with distinctive colour patterns and largely separate ranges.
