The 2002 equid conservation reference lists Equus hemippus, described by I. Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire in 1855 from Syria, and Equus hemionus var. syriacus, given by Milne-Edwards in 1869 from Damascus, among the names of the Syrian wild ass.
