Samr is usually 4–8 m tall (up to 20 m), with a dense flat umbrella-like crown, tiny leaflets, fragrant white to yellow flowers and twisted pods that give it the name 'tortilis'.
Samr bears paired spines: short, hooked brown thorns (up to 5 mm) and long, straight white thorns (up to 10 cm). Its pods are flat, twisted and coil-like, 5–15 cm long, yellowish-brown, and contain 5–18 seeds. In extremely dry conditions the tree (4–15 m, multi-stemmed and umbrella-shaped) may be dwarfed into a small wiry shrub no more than one metre tall.
