A small erect, hairy herb 2–50 cm tall, branching from the base; pinnate leaves with 4–12 pairs of small leaflets end in a short bristle or sometimes a tendril. Inflorescences bear 1–4 flowers with pale purple or white corollas; the pod is 8–15 mm with 2 compressed grey seeds whose cotyledons are orange-red.
