The most common habitats of this fungus are forests in the warm, humid temperate zone, where the ground is covered with fallen leaves and humus-rich soil. In western France it is one of the dominant macrofungi under introduced Cupressus macrocarpa cypresses, and it has also been found in semi-arid areas such as sand dunes on the French Atlantic coast and under mesquite trees in the Sonoran Desert of California, as well as in gardens, lawns and near horse and sheep dung.
