This mushroom has been part of the human diet for over 200 years; it is grown on compost, and its worldwide cultivation is a multibillion-dollar industry.
This mushroom has been cultivated since the early eighteenth century in France, then spread to the United States, where large-scale industrial cultivation arose, and then to the rest of the world. Its commercial cultivation accounts for 61.8% of world production of edible mushrooms, with a value estimated at US$28.5 billion in 2020. The study's analyses indicate that the species originated in Europe about 4.6 million years ago.
