Flora of China describes barley in its treatment as an annual grass with smooth erect culms 50–100 cm tall, leaf blades 9–25 cm long and a dense six-rowed spike. The lemma apex bears a long awn 8–15 cm or a three-forked appendage, and the grain may adhere to or be free from the lemma and palea. These are traits of that treatment and do not imply that all cultivated barley forms are six-rowed.
