Flora of China describes garlic's bulb as globose to flattened-globose, usually composed of several cloves within a common white-to-purple membranous tunic. Leaves are linear to linear-lanceolate, up to 2.5 cm wide, and the scape is 25–50 cm tall. The umbel bears many bulblets and few, usually pale red flowers, and the spathe has a beak 7–20 cm long.
