An annual herb 1–2 m tall with an often hollow stem and palmately 3–7-lobed leaves; solitary axillary flowers with a corolla 5–7 cm across, yellow or white with a dark purple centre; the capsule is cylindrical, beaked, 10–25 cm long, with dark brown or grey seeds.
